Do Fins Build Leg Strength?
Yes, and more effectively than many swimmers expect.
The blade of a swimming fin creates significantly more drag than a bare foot, which means every kick cycle pushes against greater resistance. Over a training set, this adds up to a genuine strength stimulus for the quads, hip flexors, hamstrings, glutes, and calves.
Shorter, stiffer fins tend to build more strength than longer, more flexible blades, because they require more muscular effort to move through the water efficiently. Longer blades offer more propulsion with less effort; these are excellent for drills, but offer a softer strength stimulus.
If building leg power is a specific goal, shorter fins combined with kick sets or vertical kicking will deliver more than long blade fins used for easy drill work.
Are Fins Good for Swimming Training?
Yes - for swimmers at almost every level. The exceptions are narrow:
- Fins aren't appropriate for very young beginners who are still learning basic water confidence (the added propulsion can be overwhelming and mask fundamental issues)
- Swimmers who use fins to avoid doing the difficult work of developing their kick without assistance aren't getting the same benefit - fins should supplement, not replace, bare-foot training

Fin length is the most important choice you'll make when buying, and the answer depends on what you're using them for.
Short Fins
Short training fins, typically with a blade 5–10cm beyond the foot, are the standard choice for competitive swimmers and most squad training.
Short fins are best for:
- Freestyle and backstroke kick sets
- Sprint and speed training
- Building leg strength
- Butterfly kick work
- Swimmers who want a more natural kick rhythm
Why: Short fins maintain a relatively natural kick tempo, closer to what you'd use bare-footed. They build strength effectively without throwing off your stroke timing. Many coaches prefer short fins for this reason: their carry-over to unassisted swimming is more direct.
Long Fins
Longer blades (more similar to snorkelling or scuba fins, though swim-specific long fins are shorter than dive fins) generate much more propulsion per kick cycle. Monofins

How Tight Should Swimming Fins Be?
