County Championships Are Coming – Are You Ready?

County Championships Are Coming – Are You Ready?

County Championships are happening all across the UK in the coming weeks. Long days, lots of swimming, and even more cheering on friends and teammates lie ahead.

Much of the hard work has already been done in the pool over weeks, months, and years of training. But race day preparation still matters. A calm, organised swimmer is far more likely to perform at their best.

To help you feel confident and prepared, we’ve put together this race day preparation guide including a checklist.

Our biggest tip? Pack your bag the night before.

County Championships Packing Checklist

Nutrition

Fuel starts the day before competition.

  • Eat plenty of carbohydrates to keep energy levels up
  • On race day, eat little and often
  • Allow enough time for food to digest before racing
  • Keep sugar levels steady – avoid eating all your sweets at once!

Hydration

Hydration is key!

  • Bring plenty of water and sip throughout the day
  • Some people like an electorlyte
  • Eat plenty of carbohydrates to keep energy levels up

Race Suit (Of Course!)

  • Make sure you’ve tried it on in advance
  • Know how long it takes to put on – no last-minute stress
  • Always pack a backup race suit (accidents happen!)

Layers

Staying warm after warm-up is essential.

  • Hoodies, joggers, t-shirts, or parkas help keep muscles loose
  • Especially important between races

Warm-Up Suit

  • Don’t put your race suit on too early
  • Wearing a warm-up suit protects your race suit
  • Saves it for when it really matters and gives you that mental race-day boost

Goggles & Hat

  • Adjust and dive-test your goggles before your first race
  • Keep them safe in a goggle case (they do go missing!)
  • Bring a backup pair of goggles, already adjusted
  • Spare hat = less panic if one snaps

Footwear

  • Sliders, flip-flops, or pool shoes
  • Keeps feet clean and prevents slipping on poolside

Race Bag (Poolside Bag)

Some venues only allow small bags on poolside.

  • Bring a compact bag behind the blocks
  • Useful for:
    • Backup goggles
    • Spare hat
    • A small drink
  • Keeps essentials close and nerves under control

A Fan

This one’s for parents and supporters!

  • Long, hot days on poolside
  • A small fan can be a lifesaver

Recovery

On poolside and at home

  • Don't sit still all day
  • Mobility, stretching and foam rolling to aid recovery
  • Get a good nights sleep!

Good luck to all swimmers competing at County Championships this season! 🏅
